5 ways to decorate a Christmas wreath for festive flair!

Step 1: start simple

Personalised Christmas decorations put an individual spin on the season, and you can get the family involved too. If you want to add your own festive touch to a wreath without building one from scratch, you can grab a plain wreath and add your own decorations!

Round wreaths are a classic choice, and the options are almost endless. There’s classic green pine as well as other vibrant colours, or mixtures of materials including pinecones and holly for an extra festive boost! You can also find wooden wreaths for something a little bit different.

Buying a reusable wreath has its benefits. Not only can you pull out the same tried-and-tested Christmas wreath every year to save the pennies, but it’ll also withstand the elements if you’re making an outdoor wreath.

Top tip: Don’t forget to grab a wreath hanger or some adhesive hooks to keep your wreath where it’s meant to be!

Step 2: light it up!

Add some seasonal sparkle to your Christmas wreath with some wonderful LED lights! Grab yourself a set of string lights and wrap them around your wreath. We like using battery-operated string lights for wreaths on doors, as you don’t want to risk cables getting stuck in the doorframe. Simply tuck the battery pack within your wreath to keep things looking tidy.

If you’re hanging your wreath indoors or in a window frame, you could use plug-in lights on a timer switch. That’s one less thing to think about!

Whether you keep it wintery with cool white, add a festive glow with warm white, or go bold with multicolour, always go for LED when creating your own lighted Christmas wreath. Not only are they cheap to run with a long lifespan, but they also don’t get as hot as other bulbs which could damage your wreath.

Pop your wreath with lights somewhere it’ll get noticed, either on the front door for a warm welcome, or in the window. If it is going outside, make doubly sure that you’re using lights that are suitable for outdoor use!

Step 3: wrap it up with bows & ribbons

Now the stage is set for your Christmas wreath to be the star of the show! For a traditional look, popping a large bow on your wreath is a fantastic festive touch.

Ribbons can help to add some shape and colour to your wreath. Choose a shade which complements the base colour in Christmassy tones like gold, silver, or red. There are velvet ribbons for a touch of luxury, or why not try out some patterns to really make it stand out?

Remember to use ribbons which are in proportion with your wreath. Wide ribbons give a bold look to larger wreaths, but you should use slimmer ribbons on small wreaths. For some extra pizzaz, you could even replace the ribbons with tinsel!

Wrap your ribbons or tinsel around your wreath the same way as the lights, making sure not to cover them up as you do so.

Step 4: add seasonal greenery

Embrace a bit of natural beauty with some classic Christmas greenery such as berries, pinecones, or holly. Christmas picks are great for this, adding little pops of seasonal plant life onto your Christmas wreath – just be careful of the wires!

There are also artificial poinsettias and mistletoe which will never go amiss – plus, it’s a great excuse to get a kiss from your loved one every time you leave the house!

Holly and mistletoe berries also add some natural colour to your wreath, even if they’re artificial. Space yours evenly around your wreath for a lovely balanced look.

Step 5: make it yours with festive ornaments!

By now, your Christmas wreath is probably full to the rafters. However, if you’ve got some room to spare, it’s easy to fill with some Christmas ornaments!

Baubles aren’t just for the tree; hang some on your wreath, or nestle them amongst the branches, for another pop of seasonal colour. Classic colours like red, green and gold are sure-fire hits, but remember – this is your wreath, and you can decorate it however you like!

Other small ornaments like snowflakes or festive figurines such as Santa, snowmen, or angels will also look brilliant on your Christmas wreath.

It’s always a good idea to choose shatterproof ornaments where possible. You can use thin wire to help secure them onto your wreath – use thin wire, or wire that’s the same colour as your wreath base, and tuck it in between the branches to keep them out of sight.
