Treats are the best way to reward your cat or dog for good behaviour, or even if you just feel like it! With our homemade versions, you can bake a stash of delicious and healthy goodies for a fraction of the price – it’s also a great activity to get the kids involved with too.
Remember, treats shouldn’t replace any part of your pet’s normal diet, and don’t go overboard – no matter how much your cat or dog enjoys them!
Homemade dog treats recipe
This dog biscuit recipe is so simple to make! You can also get creative with shapes, whether you have a dog bone cookie cutter, seasonal shapes, or want to create your own with a small knife. Just remember to keep them similar in size so they bake evenly. This is also a great recipe to use up any bananas that are a little past their best, as they mash much easier.
Ingredients
- 140g wholewheat flour
- 100g peanut butter (must be 100% peanuts, no additives!)
- 1 banana, mashed
- 3 tbsp water
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celcius, 160 fan
- Mix the flour, peanut butter and banana in a large bowl with a spoon
- Add the water one tbsp at a time until the dough is smooth and holding together
- Tip the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to a depth of ½ cm with a rolling pin
- Use cookie cutters to cut your dough into shapes, or cut them into small squares
- Pop a sheet of greaseproof paper onto a baking tray and put your dog treats on top
- Bake for 10 – 12 minutes, or until lightly golden
- Remove the tray from the oven and leave the treats on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely
- Store in an airtight container and use within 2 weeks. They also freeze well!
Homemade cat treats recipe
Your cat’s diet requires high amounts of protein, which is what makes the ingredients list of this recipe so straightforward. Use tinned tuna which is packed in water, not oil or brine, as it could end up too salty for your feline. Keep a close eye on these ones in the oven, too – because they’re smaller, they’ll colour much faster.
Ingredients
- 1 tin of tuna, drained
- 1 egg white
Method
- Preheat your oven to 170 degrees celcius, 150 fan
- Whisk the egg white until it forms stiff peaks
- Pop your tuna in a blender, or a separate bowl with a whisk, and blend until smooth. Combine thoroughly with two tablespoons of the whisked egg whites
- Gently fold in the remaining egg white until you’ve formed a smooth paste
- Pop the mixture into a piping bag and pipe small rounds onto a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. Keep them small, or your cat will have trouble chomping on them!
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the treats are dry and cooked through
- Leave to cool on a wire rack and store in an airtight jar for up to 2 weeks
