Easter egg hunt

Keep the kids busy

It’s no good organising an Easter egg hunt if the kids can see where you’ve hidden the chocolate! First thing’s first – distract the little ones. Here’s some Easter-themed ideas:

  • Get them to create some Easter decorations to give your home a springtime lift – painted eggs, colourful rabbit pictures or pressed flowers are all lovely choices in-keeping with the season
  • Have a family member help them with some delicious Easter bakes! Chocolate nests or traybakes decorated with mini eggs are easy, inexpensive, and look fantastic – perfect for keeping idle hands busy and letting you crack on with organising the egg hunt

Count your eggs

Have you ever hidden so many eggs in such fiendish locations that you’re still finding them weeks later? Make sure no eggs are left undiscovered by taking a quick tally of how many eggs you’ll be hiding.

Hiding eggs in your home

Now the fun really starts – hiding the eggs!

First, decide on which rooms you’ll be hiding the eggs in. While there’s nothing stopping you from organising a massive Easter egg hunt throughout your entire home, be wary of rooms that are bathed in light. Your Easter egg hunt could quickly become a ‘melted chocolate on the carpet’ hunt, and it’s a real pain to clean!

Make some of your eggs visible and easy to find, and pop some in more tricky places. This will make sure everyone gets involved, and makes it last longer while the kids (or adults!) frantically search for cleverly hidden eggs.

Here are some hiding place ideas for each room to get you started:

Living room

  • Easy: nestled on the bookshelf, under the coffee table, balanced on top of a photo frame
  • Hard: on top of the curtain track, behind a cushion, in place of a light bulb in a lamp

Kitchen

  • Easy: in the fruit bowl, on the drying up rack, on top of appliances
  • Hard: inside the washing machine (just remember not to turn it on), hidden in their favourite mug, in place of a real egg in an egg box

Bedroom

  • Easy: on the pillow, under the bed, balanced on wardrobe or chest of drawer handles
  • Hard: inside a pillowcase, hidden amongst socks (clean ones…), on top of the wardrobe

Hiding eggs in the garden

If spring has finally sprung and the weather’s nice enough, take your Easter egg hunt outside! The kids will love running around the garden trying to find tasty treats.

There’s a few more things to think about when you’re organising your egg hunt in the great outdoors. Even if your eggs are wrapped in foil, you shouldn’t put any on bare ground to avoid contamination from wildlife waste.

We’d also avoid the shed, as you can’t be sure of any spillage from garden chemicals or hidden dangers like mouse urine. We’re sorry to bring that up in a nice blog about Easter egg hunts, but better safe than sick!

Why not grab an Easter basket or bucket and use those to hide your eggs outside? Not only does it look fantastic, but it’ll also stop you from having to put eggs on bare ground.

Always hide your eggs in shaded spots to avoid melting, and be especially cautious if you have pets around. Dogs and cats can become quite ill if they snaffle any chocolate, so keep them under close watch if they’re outside with you.

Depending on the size of your garden, you’ll have loads of places to hide some eggs! Here are some of our favourites:

  • Easy: on the garden table, edge of the patio, on top of a plant pot
  • Hard: hanging from a tree, in a crack in the wall/fence

Leave some clues

This is a great way of using Easter decorations to help your hunters find the Easter bunny’s hidden stash! If you’re in the home, leave little messages from the Easter bunny on colourful cards with hints on where to look.

You could really get creative and leave clues in areas that the Easter bunny has been. How about pulling some books off the bookshelf and leaving an egg where the gap is, or make it look like a naughty rabbit has been sorting through their chest of drawers?

If you’re in the garden, pop an empty plant pot on its side and hide some eggs in there. Use small piles of potting mix on your lawn to make it look like the Easter bunny has been digging – who knows what they’ll find if they follow them!

The hunt begins

Ready, set, hunt! Give each hunter a basket or bucket to hold the eggs, and let them loose! Easter egg hunts are brilliant fun for the whole family, and are a brilliant way to celebrate the start of summer.
