- Compact tree, perfect for small spaces and patios
- Heavy crop of sweet plums
- Great for fresh fruit, jams, and summer desserts
Plum ‘Black Amber’ is a heavy cropping variety producing wonderful dark skinned fruit with a soft, sweet and juicy flesh. Ideal for snacking or for use in jams and puddings, although this tree is compact, it’s branches will be laden with these delicious fruit during summer. Grafted onto a dwarf rootstock, this delightful plum variety is the perfect choice for small gardens, so you can reap the rewards of growing your own fruit even if your space is limited. Plant patio fruit trees in 60cm 2’ diameter containers using a good quality compost such as John innes No.3. Alternatively plant them in any well drained soil in a sheltered sunny position. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level, firm them into the ground and water well. Feed and water containerised plants regularly. Pruning fruit trees begins immediately after planting. Remove the central stem to just above the highest side branch. For the following 3 years, prune only the tips of the remaining main branches by one third in winter. Aim for about six main branches which will form the frame of your tree, with fruiting sub branches growing off of them. From the fourth year, some sub branches can be pruned out at the union where they join the main branch, to allow new sub branches to take their place.
